Introduction. The increase in algal reproductive rates caused by nitrogen regeneration from herbivorous zooplankton approximately equaled the zooplankton-caused mortality. This result demonstrates that nutrient regeneration by herbivores is at least sometimes a strong indirect effect in natural communities.
