The adults of most Punkies or Biting Midges (463 NA spp) attack invertebrates, sucking hemolymph. A few are bothersome to man. Perhaps 20 species have been collected at Cedar Creek, but as with other families of Nematocera, many more are sure to be found here.

Tentative ID's of genera collected include: Alluaudomyia, Atrichopogon, Bezzia, Clinohelea, Culicoides, Dasyhelea, Forcipomyia, Heteromyia, Johannsenomyia, Palpomyia, and Probezzia.
