(Dance Flies)
Nearly twenty species of Dance Flies (728 NA spp) have been collected at
CCESR, but serious collecting will yield many more. Larvae are aquatic
or terrestrial predators; and most are at home in woodland.
Hemerodromia,
Tachydromia,
and
Tachypeza can be
found on the trunks of trees. Black humpbacked species of
Hybos
and
Euhybos occur near
water. Species of
Axelempis,
Platypalpus,
Rhamphomyia,
and
Empis are common
woodland inhabitants. Others genera collected include:
Hilara,
Megagrapha,
Ocydromia,Bicellaria,
Syneches,
Drapetis,
and
Stilpon.
