Insects of Cedar Creek

Order DIPTERA

Family PHORIDAE

(Humpbacked Flies)

(Table of Species)

Specimens of Humpbacked Flies (226 NA spp) are fairly common in old field sweeps. Perhaps 15 species have been collected. Tentative generic determinations include: Anevrina, Borophaga, Diplonevra, Gymnophora, Dohrniphora, Phora, Triphleba, and Megaselia spp. Most species are suspected to be scavengers as larvae, but some of these grotesque species are parasitic on scale insects.
